Art days out
From Bridget Riley to Yorkshire Sculpture Park – go see art during the winter break.
Are you stuck for things to do during the winter holidays? Or perhaps you’re visiting London or the UK and want to fill your days with great art? Here are my recommendations to keep you busy, from family-friendly museums to a snow-filled sculpture walk. Scroll on!
Bridget Riley: Learning to See at Turner Contemporary, Margate
This show brings together works from across Riley’s 60 year career, celebrating her mastery of colour and space. As a kid, Riley was my favourite artist. I remember being dazzled by her pictures that gave the effect of optical illusions, so this show is perfect for families, too. While you’re in Margate, don’t miss TKE Studios, Carl Freedman Gallery, and dine at The Perfect Place to Grow.
Kerry James Marshall: The Histories at Royal Academy of Arts
This momentous, must-see exhibition is full of Marshall’s epic paintings that reframe Western art history and celebrate the beauty of Black life. Don’t miss Marshall’s interview on This Cultural Life, where he talks about Veronese being his Michael Jordan!
Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Take a walk through the 500 acres of Yorkshire Sculpture Park and you’ll come across works by Barbara Hepworth, Anya Gallaccio, Henry Moore, Bharti Kher, Niki de Saint Phalle, and more. Plus, don’t miss the exhibitions from William Kentridge and Jordy Kerwick, on now.
Marie Antoinette Style at V&A South Kensington
I loved this show! Exploring the French queen’s life and lasting influence across design, film, and fashion over the last 250 years, it’s bursting with fascinating objects; clothes, perfumes, jewels, prints, paintings and more. Don’t forget to watch Sofia Coppola’s 2006 classic before you go.
