The best art to see outside London
From TKE Studios' Summer Fair to former artist and collectors' homes, these are the best art-filled days out!
Hello art lovers! With the Bank Holiday coming up, what better way to spend it than a day-trip to one of the UK’s best art-filled locations? From former homes and studios to summer fairs run by artists, this is my rundown of the best art days out. Katy Xoxo
1. Charleston Trust, Sussex
This is the former home of the Bloomsbury Group, lived in by the likes of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. Not only is it covered wall-to-ceiling in their art – from every fireplace to wardrobe – but it’s also home to the Famous Women Dinner Service, an incredible collection of 50 plates by Bell and Grant, emblazoned with the faces of notable women in history, from 1932.
This Autumn, drawings by David Hockney will be shown at the house, and across town in Lewes, an exhibition dedicated to Bloomsbury and Fashion, which looks at the fashion designers who have been influenced by the house and those who lived in it.
Nearest station: Lewes.
2. Hauser & Wirth Somerset
I’ve probably visited Hauser & Wirth Somerset more than any gallery outside London. It’s free to visit, and has hosted shows by the likes of Louise Bourgeois, Bharti Kher, and Don McCullin. Currently, they’re showing a group exhibition featuring Jenny Holzer, Pipilotti Rist, Alina Szapocznikow, and more. And for those garden and food lovers, check out the Piet Oudolf-designed garden (image below), plus their beautiful farm and bookshop, where they always have on display The Story of Art Without Men!
Extra tip: For lunch in the nearby town of Bruton, I recommend The Old Pharmacy, Osip, or, if you want pizza, At the Chapel.
Nearest station: Castle Cary.
3. Jupiter Artland, Edinburgh
This is one of the most dazzling houses-slash-sculpture gardens, run by the most magic couple, Nicky and Robert Wilson. On view in the depths of the forest is a colossal Tracey Emin bronze – which I wrote about for my Substack – a Joana Vasconcelos swimming pool, and so much more. Currently on view in their exhibition space is the ceramic maestro, Lindsey Mendick.
Nearest station: Edinburgh Waverly / Kirknewton.
4. TKE Studios’ Summer Fair, Margate
Speaking of Lindsey Mendick, the TKE Studios – where Mendick works and where the Tracey Emin Artist Residency is based – is having their summer fair this Saturday! There will be all sorts of performances, food, and fun, where you can win art prizes and more. 1–6pm.
Extra tip: Don’t miss the Turner Contemporary and Carl Freedman Gallery.
Nearest station: Margate.
