Eleanor Nairne’s Alice Neel – Hot Off The Griddle Exhibition Catalogue (2023)
If you haven’t booked to see this exhibition, do it now! I’ve already spent so much time there and it hasn’t even opened. Expect a lot of Neel content over the next few weeks. In addition to the felt emotion when witnessing Neel’s paintings (I will be here all day if I start talking about them, I recommend you read Chantal Joffe in the FT for more), one of the most touching moments in the show is the final room: a reading room with books by writers who Neel painted and knew (from Jack Kerouac to Frank O’Hara), with bookmarks ft. a picture of the writer’s portrait marking the pages that relate to the painter.
The accompanying book is beautiful, too. I loved this paragraph in Nairne’s essay:
